IRONIC NEWS ARTICLES Experts now agree that the number of ironic news articles is reaching an epidemic. The number of outlets for them is growing at such a rate that they will soon outnumber conventional so-called "non-ironic" news reporting. Perhaps Saint Hunter was right after all. Professor Madeup Name of the University of Reinforce My Particular World View agrees. "Many of these articles are written by people who either once had jobs working in the written media, or who lack the talent or motivation to pursue such a career." The Professor went on to highlight a few of the key characteristics of these bogus articles. "The articles are often cynical, and designed to support a particular world view. Where this is achieved with sublety it can be quite amusing. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these ersatz scribblings don't manage this - instead they appear quite bitter and reflect badly upon the author. Indeed, defeating the authorial intention of appearing cleverer than the reader - who's supposed not to have noticed the apparent truths paraded in front of hims/hers." "If you use overblown language and amplify the smallest minutiae of life out of all proportion, you may get a cheap laugh - perhaps pun-based - but most often it will collapse, like an underdone scuffle, you might say, and make you look at best, smug. And try not to use too much punctuation. And if you must mention iree(leva/vere)nt Government departments, don't. That's almost as bad as using silly made-up names. This isn't a restoration comedy, you know," said Professor Name. So, all in all, they're not very subtle are they? How scare. Ton I. |
